My Story

My passion for education began when I gave up my professional dancing career in the early 1990s and having focused on a dancing career for 20 years, I had not gone to University and I really felt drawn to getting my mind involved in academic study as my school had been very much focused on dancing, drama and the arts. So I studied for a degree in Psychology and loved it so much that I went on to do a Masters degree in the subject.

During this time, I was working at University, helping students with disabilities access the lectures and educational materials and realised that I had a natural ability to help others learn through encouragement and support. I really love sharing that love of learning with others as having a good, sound education can not only open doors for you but can set up a lifelong passion for learning as well as an enquiring mind.

After I completed my Master’s degree, I did a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and starting teaching in schools and colleges in London and Kent. This experience lead me to set up My121tutor in 2006 as I felt that the one to one approach as opposed to one to many enabled me to help each individual student on a more personal basis and it also offered the opportunity to create a more personal relationship with parents as well as the student.

Over the years I have tutored hundreds of students at all levels and abilities and sometimes I bump into past students in the street and they are all grown up and they recognise me – say ‘hello’ and tell me what they have been doing. I feel very proud that I have played a part in helping them on their journey and although I don’t change that much – they certainly do! It is such a rewarding job and the testimonials here are just some of the comments that parents and students have made on their experience of having tuition with me.

Rowena has tutored my daughter for over five years now and initially prepared her for the 11+ entrance exam. My daughter passed the 11+ with excellent marks and gained a place in a local grammar school in 2017. Rowena was excellent at forging a relationship with my daughter and in establishing her areas of strength and weakness and building up her confidence ready for the test.

Rowena has been tutoring our son for GCSE Higher Maths since he started Secondary School. He is currently year 11 and on track to achieve a high grade with the intention of continuing on to A level maths. He has enjoyed all his lessons and was comfortable asking Rowena for further assistance if needed. Rowena is very organised, approachable and has been an integral part of our son’s education. We would recommend her without hesitation.
